IN an amusing trademark claim, outdoor clothing line the north face has sued 19 year old University of Missouri freshman James Winkelmann for trademark infringement and dilution.

Winkelmann produced a parody clothing line the north face outlet as a joke. Winkelmann says he was inspired to do so after noticing that all his friends were buying North Face clothes even though they were not mountaineers.

The young entrepreneur decided to poke fun at the idea by coming up with a South Butt logo, which looks a lot like north face boots logo, with the design in reverse.

According to a motion filed in December in the United States, north face jackets said Winkelmann had caused it irreparable harm. It did not find the joke funny, and Winkelmann ignored the company’s demand for him to cease-and-desist.

The North Face retained IP lawyers and sued Winkelmann, his small company, as well as the pharmacy that sells South Butt clothing.

They are typically sold until it gets warmer . . . which is usually around mid-April/early May.
There are definitely North Face knockoffs, but there are excellent local brands as well. I bought my daughter a coat in Beijing back in 2005 and she wore it through four winters. We just replaced it this year.
If you don’t want to have to deal with tourist prices, you might try to go to some more local north pole clothing markets. However, if your time is limited, then go to Ya Show, the Pearl Market or Silk Street Market. Start your bargaining at 10% of what they start at. Know your limit as to how much you are willing to pay. Buy bulk from one north face jackets location and bargain even harder. Inspect all seams, zippers and hoods.
